Barthell OES Home, located in Decorah, Iowa, was made possible through a bequest from Sister Mathilda A. Barthell in 1967. She was a lifelong Eastern Star member. OES stands for the Order of the Eastern Star. Completed in 1969, our Home is situated in a peaceful setting overlooking the Upper Iowa River valley. Originally, only Mason and Eastern Star members were accepted. Now it is open to everyone, with priority going to Mason and Eastern Star members.
In 1993, the Mathilda A. Barthell OES Home was reincorporated as the Barthell OES Home. We are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, and are managed by a five-member board. We depend solely on resident fees for survival, but do encourage tax deductible donations. These donations are used to upgrade our facilities, equipment, and other items that would enhance the life of our residents.
The nursing home is licensed as a 46-bed nursing facility, with both private and semi-private rooms available. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated, with individual call systems.
On the complex, we also have six independent living apartments and 32 assisted living apartments, including an affordable guest room for family members to rent. Our van provides transport to local medical appointments, and we have a bus available for day trips and social outings.
The nursing home has qualified, caring nurses and CNAs (certified nursing assistants) on duty 24 hours per day. The assisted living has attendants on duty 24 hours per day, and a registered nurse five days a week. A full-time social worker and activity director are on staff, along with a food service supervisor and contracted registered dietitian. We also have contracted physical and occupational therapists, and speech pathologists. Two Nustep machines are available in the nursing home, and one in assisted living, to encourage resident wellness and exercise. We have an in-house Rehabilitation Aide, to develop individualized exercise programs for each resident.
We are 100% private pay, and accept payment from long-term care insurance companies. We do not accept payment from Medicare or Medicaid. You will find that our rates are affordable and competitive in comparison to other facilities. Prior to nursing home admission these requirements must be met:
- Either a chest x-ray or T.B. test within the last twelve months.
- A current History & Physical (within the last 30 days).
- Evaluation from our admitting staff.
Our goal is to provide quality care in a family-like atmosphere, promoting the health and happiness of our residents and their families.
Grace in this season of life
Joy in the little things
Hope in times of uncertainty &
Comfort as people transition from independence to support
By providing loving care to those we call our family.
