Barthell O.E.S. Home, located in Decorah, Iowa, was made possible through a bequest from Sister Mathilda A. Barthell in 1967. She was a lifelong Eastern Star member. O.E.S. stands for the Order of the Eastern Star. Completed in 1969, the Home is situated in a peaceful setting overlooking the Upper Iowa River valley. Originally, only Mason and Eastern Star members were accepted for admission. Now, it is open to everyone, with priority going to Mason and Eastern Star members.
In 1993, the Mathilda A. Barthell OES Home was reincorporated as the Barthell O.E.S. Home. We are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, managed by our Board of Directors. We depend solely on resident fees for survival, and do encourage tax-deductible donations. These donations are used to upgrade our facilities, equipment, and other items that would enhance the life of our residents.
Barthell O.E.S. Nursing Home is a licensed, 46-bed nursing facility, with a recent expansion project completed in 2020.
Arlin Falck Assisted Living was built in 2000, with 16 apartments. In 2003, 16 more apartments were added for a total of 32 apartments.
Barthell O.E.S. Independent Living was also built in 2000 and consists of a fourplex and a duplex.
The Barthell Bluffs Townhomes were completed in 2019, consisting of eight units.
Waiting lists are maintained for each of our facilities.
Barthell O.E.S. Home is 100% private pay, and does accept payment from long-term care insurance companies. We do not accept payment from Medicare or Medicaid. You will find that our rates are affordable and competitive in comparison to other facilities.
